Did you know the world is running out of sand? Each year, over fifty billion tons of sand are used. Only certain types of glass are recycled, and due to recycling regulations not allowing broken glass, most glass gets sent to landfills because its composition is unknown. The goal of this project was to solve that problem. We developed a box with a laser through a glass block and a camera that calculates the composition of the block. Voted second for most innovative in Louisiana Tech engineering expo 2022.
For this project, my team and I used an html page for the frontend and python for any calculations. The composition of the block is calculated using Snell's law. Based on the enter and exit angle of the laser through the block, we then used Snell's law to determine composition. The three types we used for this project were borosilicate, acrylic, and tempered glass.
